Saudi Arabia is set to launch an innovative cable car system by 2025 to enhance the experience of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims visiting the historic Cave of Hira on Jabal al-Noor, near Makkah. This mountain holds deep Islamic significance as the site where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the first Qur’anic revelation.

The cable car will span approximately 4 km, ascending about 600 meters, and will directly connect the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) to the Cave of Hira. This will dramatically improve accessibility, particularly for elderly pilgrims and people with physical challenges, replacing the steep and difficult climb currently required.

The project is part of the broader Hira Cultural District, covering 67,000 square meters, and includes the development of three museums in Jabal Omar and the Mount Thor Cultural District. These attractions are also expected to open by 2025, enriching the spiritual and historical experience for visitors.

Until the cable car becomes operational, pilgrims can visit a life-size replica of the Cave of Hira in the cultural district. The design of the cable car system emphasizes modern engineering, sustainability, and safety, while preserving the sacred and spiritual environment of the site.

This initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to boost religious tourism and improve infrastructure for millions of pilgrims. The project is also seen as a step toward creating a more inclusive and educational pilgrimage experience, blending tradition with innovation.
